Steven E Stawnychy

Steven E. Stawnychy, a young recruit who served in the U.S. Navy from May to June 1975, tragically met his end just outside the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. Born on May 15, 1957, in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, in Ramsey County, Minnesota. According to a website called Save Our Servicemembers, Stawnychy was deeply unhappy and depressed during his time in the Navy. The website claims that the Navy's lack of support and care was a significant factor in his despair. It alleges that he faced abuse and neglect from his superiors and peers, disrupted a military drill, went AWOL, and was assaulted and battered by three marine guards while in the brig. The despondent Stawnychy, who had threatened suicide before, ultimately took his own life by stepping in front of a passenger train. The website asserts that the Navy did nothing to help him. Stawnychy died on June 3, 1975; he is buried at Saint Mary of the Lake Cemetery in White Bear Lake, Minnesota.
